Welcome from the Head of Pediatrics
Welcome to the Home Page of the Department of Pediatrics at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario!
The goals of our department are to provide outstanding service to the children of our region and their families, to train the next generation of clinicians, teachers and scholars and to create new knowledge that will improve child health.
There are currently 17 geographic full time (GFT) physicians, and 18 adjunct appointees within the department. The department maintains divisions of developmental pediatrics, critical care, hematology/oncology and neonatology.
The department is actively involved in undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education. This year we have 20 residents in our pediatric postgraduate program which prepares residents to be general pediatric consultants and also provides a core training program for those planning careers in subspecialty pediatrics.
Research by residents and faculty is supported and encouraged in the department. Established research foci include basic science research in developmental neurobiology and gastroenterology. Clinical studies include controlled trials of emerging drug treatments for childhood malignancies, caffeine for apnea of prematurity, prevention of nosocomial infections in neonates with a specific immunotherapy, and a long term study focused on the prevention of diabetes in a population identifed as high risk in the neonatal period.
Clinically we assume a family-centred approach to providing age-appropriate inpatient and ambulatory care to children from birth to age 18 through the efforts of interdisciplinary health care teams. The pediatric inpatient unit is a 21 bed regional tertiary care unit, with critical care pediatrics being provided in both an enhanced care unit on the pediatric ward and in the intensive care unit. The 22 bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit provides care to both premature and term infants from across Southeastern Ontario and beyond. Ambulatory care, including the Children's Outpatient Centre, the Child Development Centre, pediatric day surgery and procedures requiring sedation, is located at Hotel Dieu Hospital.
We thank you for your interest in our department and its programs and would be pleased to provide additional information upon request.
Yours sincerely,
J. Smythe, MD
